*** Vertical and horizontal storage machines that can save up to 70% floor space. ***

Dexion, the leading pan-European manufacturer and provider of high quality industrial and commercial storage solutions, today announced it will be exhibiting at Logistics Link South 2012, (stand No. 35) on 21-22 February. The company will be displaying its P90 I-beam range of cleaner, smarter and more cost-effective galvanised pallet racking solutions and its Hi280 industrial shelving system for single or 2 tier storage. Dexion will also be previewing a range of vertical and horizontal storage machines and providing full details of its innovative C-WIS warehouse optimisation software and dynamic pallet racking.

Visitors to the show will be able to discover how Dexion’s new vertical storage machines (Paternosters) can save up to 70% on floor space, help reduce picking errors by two thirds and optimise picking times, particularly when a batch process is being used. The Paternoster and Tornado storage machines will be launched in the UK later this year.

Visitors will also be able to learn about Dexion’s C-WIS software; an innovative solution that uses warehouse principles and 3D simulation to recreate warehouse material and workflow that then allows organisations to optimise stock locations, working methods, picking routines and storage system layout.

“Logistics Link South is a great platform to showcase the very best in storage. Organisations are looking to improve productivity and cut costs. The show gives us the opportunity to not only display products that directly meet these needs, but also to demonstrate how we can help organisations to optimise their warehouses and storage systems.” said Matt Grierson, managing director at Dexion.

And one of the most effective ways to achieve this goal is through warehouse automation. Warehouses equipped with automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) coupled with RFID technology can reap serious financial benefits by maximizing storage space and reducing overall operating costs. But the benefits of warehouse automation go way beyond improving a company’s bottom line. Research shows that the environment benefits greatly as well. With more and more companies seeking ways to be more environmentally friendly, here’s a look at 7 green benefits of warehouse automation.

Reduced physical footprint: RFID technology allows for the real time tracking of all goods that enter and leave the warehouse, resulting in tighter inventory control. In addition, AS/RS technology minimizes storage space while maximizing the handling of the inventory’s mix of fast, intermediate, and slow-moving products. As a result, an automated warehouse can store the same volume of inventory as a conventional warehouse—in 40% less space. And since less storage space means less land usage, the impact upon the environment is proportionally less as well.

Reduced energy usage: When it comes to conserving energy, the benefits of automation are many. First off, since automated warehouses take up less square footage, they typically require less energy to light, heat and cool. And since the moving of products takes energy, automated systems use less energy by streamlining operational flow to optimize product movement from point “A” to point “B”. In addition, a feature of automated storage retrieval machines known as “regenerative braking” further eliminates wasted energy.

Reduced product damage: A foremost concern for any business handling a high volume of goods is that products are not damaged in the process. This can pose a considerable problem for non- automated warehouses as products are more susceptible to damage via human error. Through the consistent, predictable and smooth handling of products via an automated system, product damage and waste can be dramatically reduced. In addition, since automated product selection is more accurate than human selection, less energy is utilized to facilitate the return of products picked and shipped in error.

Reduced machinery: Machines use energy. It’s a simple law of physics. And the more machines a warehouse needs to carry out operations, the more the environment suffers. In addition to using energy, as anyone who has ever operated a typical “warehouse machine” such as a forklift knows, machines need maintenance, which expends even more energy and can create additional waste from the disposal of worn out parts. Since warehouse automation systems are designed to operate as smoothly and optimally as possible, they tend to utilize less energy and require less maintenance than standard machinery.

Reduced staffing: Another green benefit of warehouse automation is that fewer workers are required, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the overall operation. It’s important to note that those who do work in automated warehouses are less likely to sustain a work related injury. Aside from reducing the risk of acute injury, since many of the repetitive and laborious duties in the warehouse are performed by automated systems, the risk of workers developing repetitive use injuries are also considerably less. Although many argue that automation has contributed to our nation’s current unemployment crisis, it should be noted that many of the jobs once performed by warehouse workers were inherently unsafe.

Greener packaging: In answer to the call of consumers for product packaging that is friendlier to the environment, manufacturers have responded with “green” packaging. Since “green” packaging is generally less sturdy than the packaging of the past, the use of automation processes—particularly smooth conveyor belt technology to properly handle green packaged products—has played an important role in making environmentally friendly packaging possible.

Greener profits: One of the most attractive aspects of warehouse automation is the ability to improve productivity and reduce costs. The fact that the same automation technologies that can increase profitability have also been shown to have a positive effect on the environment makes warehouse automation a win-win prospect for the right business.

The company undertook a detailed evaluation of the Flexi trucks over the course of a year at their facility near Liege before switching its fleet to Flexis.

The articulated trucks have replaced electric sideloaders and are being used to transport loads of finished components destined for the automotive sector between ArcelorMittal’s production line and the company’s on-site storage facility.

At ArcelorMittal the Flexi articulated trucks lift loads weighing up to 2,000kgs to heights of over 8 metres.

Historically, sideloaders had been used at the site because the loads carried measure up to two metres wide. However, the sideloaders were considered slow and their lack of manoeuvrability and poor operator visibility had resulted in unacceptably high levels of damage to both loads and the warehouse racking.

Flexi trucks in comparison are highly mobile and require minimal manoeuvring in the aisleways – which enables even the most awkward load to be quickly and efficiently put away and retrieved.

The Flexi’s unique front wheel drive design with ‘true radius’ turning makes stacking pallet loads safe and easy – so even inexperienced operators will not damage pallet racks or products when stacking in the aisles.

ArcelorMittal’s truck drivers underwent an easy on site conversion training course to ensure that they were familiar and comfortable with the Flexi truck’s operation and, since switching to Flexis, ArcelorMittal has reported a significant drop in handling damage as well as notably higher throughput rates.

The variation in the dimensions of the loads carried at ArcelorMittal made pallet visibility an especially important consideration when specifying the new trucks. At lower stacking heights the sideloaders previously employed offered a restricted view for the operator. However, thanks to the design of the Flexi’s ‘HiVis’ overhead guard, the operator has a clear view of the load at all levels.

“With any materials handling operation the amount of time spent in the aisleway picking and putting away loads has to be minimised if optimum operational efficiencies are to be achieved,” says John Maguire, Flexi Narrow Aisle’s sales and marketing director.

“Flexi articulated trucks are perhaps best know for their space saving characteristics, but for applications where awkwardly shaped loads are handled their manoeuvrability within the aisle can result in significant throughput speed gains, as ArcelorMittal have found.”

Most of the UK has so far escaped the arctic conditions that brought the country to a standstill last year, but winter is far from over and could still cause problems for businesses according to a leading supplier of fork lift trucks.

With forecasters predicting an imminent cold spell, Briggs Equipment is urging companies to take another look at their winter preparedness to avoid any unnecessary downtime or expense.

“So far the winter has been relatively mild, but this is no excuse to skip on some basic measures to ensure that your fork lift trucks and other materials handling equipment continue to run smoothly in all weathers,” explained Dean Mansell, Engineering Standards Manager for Briggs Equipment.

“The majority of our clients have already taken precautions but with much colder weather predicted for many parts of the country from mid-January onwards, now would be a good time to review them.

“Companies that haven’t made plans may have got away with it so far, but they really do risk being caught out if the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse.”

A few basic checks recommending by Briggs include:

• Make sure the coolant system in engine trucks has a suitable concentration of anti-freeze.

• Ensure oil and other lubricants are kept topped up to keep the truck running smoothly in the cold.

• Check that the service schedule on all trucks is up to date and carry out daily checks on significant components.

• Make sure that all outdoor areas where trucks operate are kept free of ice and snow.

• Ensure that operators know how to use the equipment safely in adverse conditions.

Dean continued: “It is vital to note that batteries in electric trucks will not operate at maximum efficiency in very cold weather, so additional charging time will need to be planned for. It’s also worth keeping in extra fuel on site in case supplies are disrupted.”

Even if the UK avoids a big freeze, there are other weather-related problems that firms should be aware of. Heavy rain can lead to a muddy working environment and it is important that trucks are cleaned regularly to avoid becoming clogged up with debris such as dead leaves.

Dean’s final comment: “Remember that the equipment is only as effective as the operator, so make sure they are suitably equipped to face the conditions, with warm, waterproof clothing.”

Any businesses that are unsure of just how prepared they are can contact Briggs for advice on 03301 239814 or email info@briggsequipment.co.uk .

The company also offers a range of equipment and accessories, including snow plough attachments, to ensure the minimum of disruption should the country face a repeat of last year’s big freeze.

Briggs Equipment UK Ltd is a leading materials handling service provider and sole distributor of Yale Materials Handling products in Great Britain. Providing a wide range of equipment for a broad customer base, Briggs provides innovative, tailored and cost effective solutions on a nationwide basis. With its headquarters and national support centre in Cannock, Briggs people assist and advise in the delivery of long term solutions that enable customers to develop more efficient and results driven businesses.

Electric forklift trucks now account for approximately 20% of the 4-5 tonne segment of the counterbalance market. As the price of fuel continues to rise and operations are increasingly sensitive to environmental concerns, high capacity, electric powered, counterbalance forklift trucks will become more and more prevalent in a wide range of applications.

Hyster features strongly in the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) portion of this market with leading diesel and LPG offerings, but for decades Hyster has also been supporting hundreds of customers throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa with 4-5 tonne electric counterbalance trucks.

Hyster is now proud to present its new addition to complete the 4-5 tonne offering with the tough new J4.0-5.0XN series. This powerful electric truck provides a low cost of operation and is designed for demanding applications such as metal fabricators, timber processors and handlers, beverage and bottling companies, breweries, paper manufacturers, pulp processors and automotive manufacturers amongst others.

Hyster recognises the importance of reliability, rugged design and load handling ability as many applications in these segments will be utilising specialist attachments and long forks to move their loads. Hyster has designed the truck to not only lift loads, but allow rock solid load handling.

The Hyster J4.0-5.0XN series incorporates the superb features of the new J-XN range including the ECO-eLo and HiP settings for optimum environmental and performance balance. AC traction and hoist motors give reliable, positive performance and the IP65 rated drive axle with maintenance free disc brakes means that the new electric truck delivers excellent performance indoors and outdoors.

Compact dimensions and extraordinary manoeuvrability are achieved by the combination of the dual drive front axle and Zero turn radius steer axle, which allows the driver to turn on the spot and achieve competitive aisle stacking widths of as low as 4,161mm (4 tonnes). This unique design has been carried through the J-XN range because it allows the best manoeuvrability without compromising on the operator ergonomics such as foot space.

Options include easily adjustable armrest with integrated TouchPoint mini levers, steering wheel with telescopic adjustment and memory tilt, Monotrol pedal, return to set tilt incorporated into the armrest, side battery removal, full or partial cabin with optional heater, impact sensor and carriage with integral side shift.

Hyster offers a high standard specification with superior ergonomics, high dependability, superb serviceability with 1000 hour service intervals and low maintenance costs, extended battery shift life and an array of options to make sure businesses can easily select the right truck for the specific application.

Hyster products are distributed and supported through an extensive network of authorised dealers, providing widespread local coverage through their sales and service locations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

The events will take place at Jungheinrich’s depots in Warrington, Birmingham, Cumbernauld, Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Bristol between February and October.

Electric and engine-powered counterbalance forklifts, pallet trucks and reach trucks will be available at the showroom events and all models on display will be offered for next-day delivery.

Each of the trucks on show will have been rebuilt at the Jungheinrich Group’s specialist used truck refurbishment centre in Dresden, Germany. The rebuild process – considered to be the most thorough in the industry – ensures that Jungheinrich used equipment gives many years of efficient and productive service. Each model comes with a full service history, LOLER certification and up to six months warranty.

“With fully refurbished lift trucks available at around two thirds of the price of a new truck – and, in some cases, up to 40 per cent less – many truck users have found that used forklifts represent an attractive and economical alternative to new equipment,” says Craig Johnson, marketing manager of Jungheinrich (UK) Ltd.

“But financial considerations are not always the key driver and many organisations also choose to invest in used equipment if their forklift usage patterns and the intensity at which their trucks are expected to perform do not warrant purchasing new units,” he adds.

Jungheinrich UK Ltd’s dedicated used equipment showrooms have an online connection to a data base covering used trucks available from all Jungheinrich Group subsidiaries throughout Europe, which means the company offers one of the most comprehensive ranges of used trucks available today.

The dates of the Jungheinrich 2012 used truck showroom events are as follows:

Warrington – February 8th and September 13th; Birmingham – April 18th and November 7th; Cumbernauld – April 25th; Milton Keynes May 16th and 17th and October 9th and 10th; Sheffield – June 27th; Bristol – July 18th.

Jungheinrich UK Ltd offers Pallet Trucks, Stackers, Counterbalance Trucks, Reach Trucks, Order Pickers, Very Narrow Aisle and Stacker Cranes in more than 600 truck variants. As well as this, Jungheinrich provide an extensive Aftersales Support Network, Rental and Financial Services, Racking Systems and Warehouse Planning. The company is a division of the German-owned Jungheinrich Group, which has manufacturing facilities Worldwide.

We’ve now reached 1976, the year Apple Computers were launched, Harold Wilson resigned as Prime Minister, Bill Grundy interviewed the Sex Pistols on TV and they became notorious overnight and Coventry Climax entered the side loader market.

Our writer is James Brindley, an acknowledged authority on fork lift trucks. James’s distinguished career has involved engineering and management roles with BT Rolatruc and serving as a Director of the FLTA, before he set up the National Fork Truck Heritage Centre in 2004 as Britain’s first such collection open to the public.

The Heritage Centre continues to need your support in 2012, and if you or your company would like to help in any way, you can contact James on the number below. Now sit back and enjoy the latest part of this fascinating series.

Episode 62: Wilson resigns: Sex Pistols storm TV: Coventry Climax expands

In April 1976 Coventry Climax acquired Joshua and Shaw Ltd of Batley, Yorkshire from the receiver for £450,000. The idea was to extend their range of equipment to contain side loaders, to lift up to and over 25 tons and a complimentary range of hydrostatically controlled fork lift trucks. The side loaders included were the “Navigator” model N60H (electric) and the “Navigator” model N66D (diesel). The photo shows these trucks working at Leah and Rowbotham’s warehouse in Stockport, unloading and warehousing bars and sections in two ton loads within firtree racking.

In addition the new acquisition included “Overlander” rough terrain trucks and pantograph reach trucks made under licence from the Raymond Corporation of the USA. There were also “Defiant”, counterbalanced reach and side loader trucks, all of which were re-named Climax-Shawloader and integrated into the Coventry Climax range. To meet the expansion programme the premises at Batley were expanded and modernised. Also, as part of the company’s overall plans a new spare parts storage warehouse of 40,000 square feet was opened in Mile Lane, Coventry and a new machine complex came on line at the Quinton Road site.

Within months of the Coventry Climax expansion the Kaye Organisation acquired the shares of the Henley Group, making it the UK’s largest industrial group. This takeover immediately gave the company the size and capability to take on the American and Japanese competition. The joining of Lansing Bagnall, a subsidiary of the Kaye Organisation, and Henley created Europe’s largest exporter of forklift trucks. The largest single benefit was that it gave the new group’s salesmen an extended range that went from small hand pallet trucks to large diesel powered trucks that could lift up to 40 tons.

Bonser forklift trucks announced news of additions to their “Super Kilo” series diesel engine models, introduced the previous year. These were the G2000K and G2500K LPG powered machines. A major feature quoted by the company was that the engines were designed from the reliable Ford Cortina 1600cc petrol engine, and as such would give an assured tried and tested performance. A further statement concerned the gas bottle and the fact that it fitted within the confines of the truck’s profile. This item could be either the 15 or 18 kg size, and because of it being at a waist high position, could be lifted on and off singlehanded. Rated lift capacities on these machines were 2000kg and 2,500kg respectively at 500mm load centres.

A purpose made forklift truck for the construction industry was put onto the market at the beginning of 1976, and some eight months later was classed as a big success. Designed by the Liner Concrete Machinery Company, the “Giraffe” was based on their 60 years’ experience of making construction site machinery. The truck’s most noticeable feature was that it had no mast, but instead had a telescopic boom with a variable position fork carriage attached on the furthermost end. The main features were a reach of nearly 4 metres from the front wheels and the ability to lift to four storeys high and also place a load below ground level. The fork carriage automatically maintained the forks in a horizontal position throughout raising and lowering, which the operator could override manually to take into account the load level when on an incline.

By James Brindley, Director, National Fork Truck Heritage Centre.

To be continued…

Linde also has a first class customer service operation ensuring that our rental hire trucks are always delivered quickly and there’s always a Linde representative on hand for extra advice and support.” Gareth Davies, health and safety manager, Inscapes

Linde Material Handling supplies Inscapes with a range of diesel engine counterbalance trucks to provide the strength and manoeuvrability needed to cope with heavy loads in an outdoor, high pressured environment.

Based in Bridgend in South Wales, Inscapes is a landscaping business which lifts and resurfaces various landscapes. The company has worked on many projects across the UK including projects at the Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, various football clubs and recently at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Gareth Davies, from Inscapes explains: “We have recently completed a large pitch extraction project at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and with the help of our Linde trucks, we completed the project 24 hours before the given deadline. We work on a project by project basis and so the Linde fork truck hire option has worked extremely well for us over the past few years. “As the Inscapes health and safety manager, it’s crucial that I ensure our workforce is safe during each project and with Linde being known for its high safety standards, it seemed like the perfect fit for our requirements.”

Rhian Stephens, senior rental controller at Linde Severnside, explains: “We first started working with Inscapes in 2005 when the company required durable trucks which were suitable for indoor and outdoor use. They needed the trucks on a short term basis due to the nature of their project work. Most of Inscapes’ projects involve the lifting and maneuvering of loads from 1.5 to 3 tonnes and so the H16 and H30D diesel engine counterbalance trucks provided the ideal solution for the company.

“The trucks supplied are multi-purpose and feature the unique Linde hydrostatic control for unparalleled performance and reliability, together with fuel-efficient and low emission engines. The advanced design features of Linde trucks also maximise operator performance, safety and comfort which in turn make shifts more productive, saving cost, time and energy for the company.”

Linde Material Handling has been developing its fork lift truck rental service over the last 20 years. It operates the largest fork lift truck rental fleet in the UK with over 10,000 units available for hire periods of one day upwards, to meet seasonal peak periods or unscheduled requirements. The fleet covers the widest range of truck types including powered pallet trucks, order pickers, reach trucks and engine/electric counterbalance trucks and the Linde national network of 23 local dealerships offers an easy one stop shop to meet any company’s peak demand needs. One call on 0845 609 333 will connect customers to Linde Lift Truck Hire at the nearest local dedicated Linde national network service for a rapid response.
