The Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) is encouraging 1,000,000 Britons to confirm their safety awareness this September in a bid to break the “accident plateau”.

Safety-WeekEvery day at least one worker in the UK suffers serious, often life-changing, injuries – or worse – as a result of an incident involving a fork lift truck.

“Sadly, nearly all of these tragedies could have been avoided with a basic understanding of key safety principles,” says FLTA Chief Executive Peter Harvey.

“Through our annual Safety Week awareness campaigns, we have seen significant improvements, but the latest HSE results indicate that we’ve reached a plateau.

“There’s never room for complacency where safety is concerned, which is why we are urging anyone whose work involves fork lift trucks – whether they’re a shelf-stacker working alongside or a CEO responsible for health and safety policy – to register now to take part in the UK’s biggest fork lift safety challenge.”

The free 10-minute challenge, which was developed in partnership with Mentor, the UK’s leading national training provider, will take place during National Fork Truck Safety Week (23 – 27 September 2013.)

Two quiz modules have been created to test knowledge at all levels: from shop floor to board room. One has been designed for those who work directly with or alongside fork lift trucks, while another is aimed at managers, supervisors and key decision makers.

Through Mentor, supporting information is available, enabling participants to improve their knowledge before taking the test. Individuals achieving scores of 85% or more will receive a certificate.

“If you are serious about your safety, you can show it by taking this simple free challenge and achieving the gold standard,” says Peter Harvey.

“All of the information you need is available on the FLTA website, alongside a huge number of free safety resources, including fact sheets, videos and much, much more.

“This ensures that as many people as possible have a good grasp on those basic safety fundamentals that can – quite literally – protect life and limb.”
