Visitors to the Temperature Controlled Storage & Distribution exhibition (TCS&D 2013) will find a whole host of ways to save costs in the cold supply chain. Taking place at the Peterborough Arena on 18th and 19th September, the show will feature the largest collection of refrigerated vehicles under one roof in the UK, as well as a wealth of other products and services for chilled and frozen logistics.

TCSANDD

Once again supported by both the Food Storage & Distribution Federation (FSDF) and the British Frozen Food Federation (BFFF), TCS&D will feature all the latest solutions to enhance efficiency and reduce costs in temperature-controlled storage and distribution. For example, first-time exhibitor, SMI, will exhibit its brand-new range of thermal barriers for use on temperature-controlled delivery vehicles on stand D24. Manufactured from SMI’s lightweight Tempro® insulated material, the barriers are designed to reduce the loss of chilled air and protect from incoming ambient air during loading and unloading. With versions suitable for both larger and smaller vehicles and both rear and side doors, the new thermal protectors – branded as Back-Stop, Truck-Stop and Carrier-Barrier – can offer a return on investment as low as 4.7 months and reduce carbon footprint by the equivalent of over 20,800 vehicle miles per year. Rapid installation is available at the client’s own site through mobile engineers from Solomon Commercials.

Commercial Body Fittings will be exhibiting a 6-rung version of its new ‘Escalier’ range of truck-mounted ladder and access steps at TCS&D, featuring double automatic handrails that retract fully when stowed. Manufactured in Europe to the highest standards, all models in the range are supplied with a robust galvanized finish. Also on the CBF stand (G26) will be a refrigeration body with a fully operational Cool-Guard bulkhead system and a range of LED refrigeration lights in various sizes and Lumen outputs.

Chilled and frozen vehicle conversion and body-building specialist, The Cold Consortium, will be showing a range of its temperature-controlled conversions on stand A21. Exhibits will include a Vauxhall Movano twin temperature conversion featuring a JR Industries mattress bulkhead and a refrigeration system developed jointly with Webasto UK. Also on display will be a Volkswagen CR35 twin temperature conversion with a moving bulkhead and chill conversions of a FIAT Ducato Maxi, a FIAT Doblo XL and a Mercedes-Benz Citan. All conversions by The Cold Consortium feature bactericide treatment, epoxy resin surfaces, LED lights in the load space and the high-quality finish that has become a hallmark of the company.

Another Mercedes-Benz on display at the show will be the new flagship vehicle in the fleet of Chiltern Cold Storage, one of the UK’s leading providers of temperature-controlled storage and distribution services. Shown on stand D6, the Actros 2545 BigSpace – finished in metallic blue – is fitted with two sets of Kelsa light bars and Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels.

A brand-new solution that has the potential to be truly revolutionary in the logistics industry – particularly in the cold supply chain – is the SOMI trailer. Standing for ‘Same Outside, More Inside’, this new design carries eight pallets more than a standard trailer by utilising the area between the wheels. Following nine years of development, the trailer is now being launched and the first mass-manufactured vehicle will be on display on the SOMI stand (V6). Featuring a middle deck that is lowered, the trailer offers more capacity than extra-long trailers with the added advantage of being able to fit standard cargo and loading bays. With a 4m height, the trailer is also ideal for cost-saving transport to Europe, where double deck trailers are not allowed. Built by Paneltex and with engineering by Tinsley Bridge, the SOMI vehicle can also be used as a conventional flat trailer, giving extra flexibility. Reducing required journeys from four to three, the trailer secures significant savings in fuel and manpower, with the added capacity especially important for vehicles needing temperature control. The other important factor is the environmental benefit through lower CO2 emissions. Says SOMI’s Managing Director, Pauline Dawes, “In addition to the fuel savings from reduced journeys, many in the industry have been surprised to discover that the new trailer also delivers improved aerodynamics that secure a fuel saving of 1% over a standard trailer.”

Another first-time exhibitor at TCS&D will be Golden Valley Pallet Wrap Specialists Ltd (GVPS). On stand C21, the company will be displaying its new ‘Carbon’ and ‘Alloy’ ranges of pallet wrap film, designed to save users money on each pallet load. Available in both hand- and machine-applied versions, GVPS claims that the new film costs 10p less per pallet than using a standard 23-micron film for a typical load; for a company that wraps 500 pallets per day this would equate to a saving of £13,000 per year. Despite being a thinner material than traditional pallet wrap, the new films offer exceptional strength and puncture resistance, which means less wrapping is needed to achieve optimum load stability and there is therefore less downtime for film roll replenishment.

The Italian company, Melform, will be exhibiting its range of insulated and refrigerated containers on stand G9. Available in capacities ranging from 20 to 1300 litres, they allow the transportation of products at different temperatures on the same non-insulated vehicle. This means more flexibility, maximising the vehicle’s load and limiting the number of trips required to a single destination. The containers are designed to be hygienically cleaned and comply with regulation 852/2004/CE (HACCP). Many are also suitable for the transport of temperature-sensitive goods in accordance with the ATP international agreement.

Automated systems supplier, SSI Schaefer, will introduce TCS&D visitors to the cost savings possible from full or partial cold store automation on stand F17. In order to prevent electronic and electro-mechanical problems in forklift fleets caused by condensation, trucks should remain in the cold store. Pallets needing to be stored or retrieved can be transported to and from ambient areas by a conveyor feed. This results in shorter transport distances for the forklifts, which may result in a smaller fleet and fewer operators being required. SSI Schaefer will also be promoting its mobile pallet racking solutions, as well as fully automated options such as its high-density automated storage systems. By minimising the need for aisles, these solutions reduce the energy costs involved in maintaining chilled or frozen temperatures in cold stores.

British manufacturer of transport refrigeration solutions, GAH, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. On stand F16 the firm will be demonstrating how its Flexi-temp solution allows two insulated compartments to be heated or cooled simultaneously, from -25°C to +25°C. GAH will also show its J500 and EX700 box body refrigeration systems for 7.5- to 18-tonne vehicles and the L201, a refrigeration unit with standby for small van applications.

TCSAD-LogoTotal Reefer (stand G1A and the outside vehicle display area) will be promoting short-term and long-term rental of reefers, as well as new or used purchase options. Said Steve Barker, MD, “What began as a local business has grown considerably in recent years and now we have a genuine offering nationally to customers of all sizes who require reefer trailers. We understand the demands that reefer operators face on a daily basis and we work hard to ensure equipment is maintained to the highest standard to avoid down time.”
