FrontAugust is the UK’s holiday month, but as a journey on our motorway network will quickly confirm, the warehouse and logistics business goes on working all year round. If you’re planning to invest in your business for the rest of the year and beyond, our features are here to help you. Our latest Fork Trucks feature looks at the latest developments across the spectrum of these machines. Warehouse Flooring takes in floor preparation, maintenance, mezzanine floors and area markings; and Conveying & Sortation covers automated materials handling equipment and IT solutions.

In our continuingly demanding business environment, the pressure is on to protect goods in transit from damage, while minimising the cost of pallets and transit packaging. On our front page, we have the welcome news that FHG IPP Logipal, the UK & Ireland’s second largest pooling supplier and leading high quality pallet pooling specialist, has launched a range of reusable box solutions comprising the FHG Bulk Box, FHG High Protection Box plus handling and packaging accessories including liners, flexible textile inserts and a smart pocket frame. The new FHG Bulk Box range is aimed at the retail and industrial sectors and offers a robust and efficient way to handle, store and carry products. The new FHG High Protection Box is ideal for transporting high value, fragile components and finished goods.

It’s not just the sun or the holiday season that’s got business people feeling happier. Coinciding with the arrival of George, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first baby, that other famous George, Chancellor George Osborne, has been saying the economy is on the mend – a right Royal recovery, even.

Things are still tough, but there are definitely signs of improvement. The latest ONS figures show our economy grew 0.6% in the three months to June, and GDP 1.4% compared with the same quarter in 2012. The latest growth estimates suggest the economy has recouped nearly half its contraction during the 2008/09 recession. And as we went to press, the CBI’s latest survey showed British retail sales rising in July at their fastest since January, with the feel-good factor from the heatwave giving high street spending a further boost.

Finally, in our own industry JCB recently announced an order for 900 Loadall telescopic handlers, a record for this icon of British industry. It’s good news indeed for everyone in warehousing and logistics. Here’s to it lasting into next year and beyond!
