ACS&T employee and fitness fan Shane Briggs tackled the London Marathon in an intrepid bid to raise funds for the national charity Children with Cancer UK and ended up securing more than £4,000 for the organisation.
Shane, who works as a stock controller at the company’s Wolverhampton depot and lives in the Penkridge area of the city, decided to run the marathon in order to give something back to society and raise funds for a worthwhile cause.
He said: “I felt it was important not only to give something back to society, but also help people and wanted to do something to raise funds for a worthy cause.
“Because I have children of my own this charity really struck me as one that makes a real and tangible difference to people’s lives and I felt compelled to roll my sleeves up and raise some money for them.”
Children with Cancer UK was established in 1988 and is dedicated to the fight against all childhood cancers.
Shane completed the marathon in an impressive three hours and forty minutes and came 2036th in his age group.
“I felt a mixture of excitement, relief and contentment when I finally finished,” continued Shane. “It began to get tough at around mile 22 for a couple of miles, but once I’d passed the 24-mile mark I felt better. Completing the marathon made all of the effort and training worthwhile.”
Managing director of ACS&T Malcolm Johnstone was delighted to be able to support Shane is his endeavours. The company matched Shane’s own fundraising efforts pound-for-pound.
“When I heard that Shane was planning on completing the London Marathon for such a worthwhile cause I was only too happy to boost his fundraising efforts,” said Malcolm. “What Shane did is commendable and myself and my colleagues supported him every step of the way.”
