ian_walshWLN – What brought you to this industry?

In 1995, I got bored in my previous position of Area Support Manager in the Manned Security Guarding Industry (and fed up with very long hours), so decided to get involved in the then fledgling Mobile security shredding Industry.

WLN – What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

The day to day challenges involved with every aspect of the Transport Industry, dealing with a varaiety of people from customers to the general public.

WLN – Who inspired you most in your career?

In fairness, it was my father-in-law, who also came from a Transport background. He was Director of Transport for a major International Company. I saw his success, and felt I could do a lot worse than ‘give Transport a try’. 17 years later, I’m still here!

WLN – If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?

Without doubt, a ‘top spec’ forklift truck…

WLN – If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?

I’d keep a diary, logging all the ‘unbelievable events’ that I have been witness to in the role over the years, with a view to getting it published in later years..along the lines of ‘it shouldn’t happen to a Transport Manager’.

WLN – What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?

Life is too short to get embarrassed..

WLN – Who or what makes you laugh?

My girls, it’s easy to forget the innocence of youth… they never fail to make me laugh, and know how to ‘pick me up’ during the stressful times.

WLN – Do you have any hidden talents?

I have a Double Bass, which is a great stress reliever and also enjoy playing guitar (badly).

WLN – Who would be your favourite party guest?

Billy Connolly. I have seen countless performances (none live I’m sad to say), but his outlook on life would be a great addition to any party.

WLN – What is the greatest luxury in your life?

Actually getting out for dinner with my wife, without kids in tow. An everyday occurance for many, but a rare treat for us!

WLN – What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

X-Box….enough said!

WLN – Do you have any secret ambitions?

Id love to fly in a Spitfire. Like many people, the thrill of flying at low altitude in such an iconic airplane would be an experience rarely surpassed.

WLN – What’s your dream holiday destination?

Sandown, Isle of Wight. I have travelled the world in the Royal Navy, and really do think that there is no place as relaxing to go on holiday than the UK.

WLN – What are your three favourite movies of all time?

Airplane, The Others and Lord of the Rings.

WLN – What is your favourite book of all time?

Lord of the Rings.

WLN – What’s your favourite pastime?

Hot Rods and Custom cars. I really should get another. I love tinkering with vehicles.

WLN – If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

Buy myself a 1950’s Ford Mecury, customise it and travel the country at weekends attending car shows. Obviously, if I only won £10.00, my goal would be on a lot smaller scale!

WLN – What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

Set your standards high and stick to your principles.
