Two of Hampshire’s leading transport providers, Meachers Global Logistics and Steve Porter Transport Group, have today announced the opening of a Southampton based cross-Solent consolidation centre. The move cements the second phase of a strategic partnership agreement that the businesses entered into in 2012 to co-operate on the delivery of inbound and outbound freight from the Isle of Wight via Southampton.

Southampton based Meachers Global Logistics, one of the UK’s leading independent providers of freight and logistics services, will manage an Isle of Wight receiving facility from its conveniently located purpose built operations based under two miles from Southampton docks. The new facility will complement Steve Porter Transport’s current depot facilities in Portsmouth, which handles both Isle of Wight and Channel Island freight.

The new consolidation centre is capable of receiving a wide range of freight from single pallet and groupage through to full loads. It also offers hazardous goods capability.  Operating on a 24-hour basis, it will allow the alliance to offer national and regional customers both a same day and next day Isle of Wight service.

Stuart Terris, Managing Director of Meachers Global Logistics said: “The opening of the Isle of Wight consolidation centre is a natural progression for the alliance and a further extension of the initial concept. We expect this service to be of great benefit to a range of customers from the retail sector through to pallet networks.”

Steve Porter, Chairman of Steve Porter Transport Group added: “This is fantastic news for new and existing customers wishing to move freight to and from the Isle of Wight. The 24-hour receiving facility provides great convenience and flexibility and opens up an exciting new range of opportunities for the alliance including the development of a true same day delivery service.”

The two businesses recently announced phase one of the alliance, which focused predominantly on the movement of freight across the Solent from East Cowes to Southampton using Red Funnel Ferries. Steve Porter Transport Group has a strong commercial partnership with Red Funnel having acquired its distribution division in 2011.
