As many Warehouse & Logistics News readers will be aware, we lost John Chalkwright (Chalky) just before Christmas 2011 to pancreatic cancer. Little is known about this cancer. Sadly, the disease is difficult to treat and survival rates are very low. Pancreatic is also the only cancer that has not seen an improvement in its survival rate figure over the last 40 years, and Cancer Research, the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research, is actively addressing the problem.

Chalky’s sons Robert, Stuart and friends took part in the Nightrider 100k cycle ride around London on 9/10 June to raise money for Cancer Research. They have raised over £4,000 so far, but they could do with more. Here’s Robert’s report from the ride to inspire you:

“The 100km bike ride started at 00.50 on Sunday morning and we spent around 6 hours and 20 minutes in the saddle, but with breaks it took over 8 hours. The ride took us around some of the major landmarks in London, but going through the west end at 2am was an experience, as you can imagine with the pubs and clubs closing. As to be expected some of the team took a wrong turn on the way, which meant they did an extra 10km  – not what we needed!

“All the team made it round with only one problem, a puncture 15 minutes from the finish line. A few celebrities also took part in the event including Ben Fogle, some of the cast from Downton Abbey and Princess Eugenie. The next day everyone was aching and walking like John Wayne! Although very tired we managed to have drinks in one of Chalky’s local pubs. It was a great experience, but next time if there is a next time, more training will need to be done!

“We would like to thank everyone who sponsored Team Chalky in raising over £4,000 for a great cause. It means so much to us doing this in the name of Dad and shows how much he was loved by all.”

If any readers would like to make a donation and round up the amount that’s been raised, the giving page is still open at www.justgiving.com/TeamChalkwright, so open your wallets!

And finally… Colney Heath FC, Chalky’s favourite team, thrashed their local rivals London Colney 6-2 in a local derby this weekend (22nd September.) John will have been looking down, cheering them on!
