Everyone knows it’s crucial to ensure all fork lift truck operators are properly trained, if a site is going to be safe. But, if you can pinpoint the exact risk areas, and focus your training to match, employers can really maximise the results.
At McCain Foods (GB) Ltd, the company has long recognised the importance of site safety. To support this, the company undertook a trial with Virtual Risk Manager – Fork Lift Truck (VRM-FLT). The aim was to use this for their risk assessment, monitoring and improving of their existing operators.
Sixty-five operators completed online assessments as part of the trial. Around half of these assessments revealed specific risk areas, which were then targeted with focused, individual coaching.
As a result, the company witnessed improvements in operator audits, reduced damage and downtime, for a safer site all around.
Earlier this year, the team’s efforts were recognised when McCain Foods was presented with the Fork Lift Truck Association Safe Site Award 2012.
At the upcoming National Fork Lift Truck Safety Conference, which will take place on Wednesday 26th September 2012 at Warwick University, delegates will hear how and why the company set about this formidable task and will reveal how such positive results were achieved.

The Association understands how fork lift owners and operators can be overburdened with the many responsibilities, rules and regulations relating to safety… so, to help them cope with the ever-changing legislation, understand the issues and find a way through the paperwork, it created the Safe User Group.
